Food Technology - Indigenous foods

At the end of Term 3, as part of our Food in Australia unit, we went to the Botanical Gardens. We looked around the succulent part of the garden before being shown into the Education Centre. Here we met Patty and Etta who showed us different plants used by the Aboriginal people.

We tried exquisite Australian native foods and learnt about their medicinal, practical, artistic and sustainable uses. We strolled around the gardens and enjoyed learning about Aboriginal culture from Etta, who knew many things about our beautiful country. Our knowledge of Australia has really deepened and we have a stronger appreciation for native foods and the Aboriginal culture.

We put our Food Tech skills to the test and made damper, popcorn and cooked kangaroo, utilising native herbs. A highlight of our trip was making wattle seed leaves into soap and weaving grass.

It was a fantastic opportunity and a great way to finish our unit on indigenous foods.
